The Top 10 most searched Korean Pop songs for the year 2012
PSY – GANGNAM STYLE – 싸이 강남스타일
This song needs no introduction. It tops the chart not just in Korea but has broken the record across the world. It is more of an anthem now. The song was released on July 15, 2012, as the lead single of his sixth studio album PSY 6. “Gangnam Style” debuted at number one on the Gaon Chart, the national record chart of South Korea. As of December 12, 2012, the music video has been viewed over 939 million times on YouTube, and is the site’s most watched video after surpassing Justin Bieber’s single “Baby.”

BIGBANG – BLUE – 빅뱅 블루
Shot entirely in New York City, the music video embodies the gentle tone of the track, which easily falls in line with previous singles such as “Love Song” and Daesung‘s “Baby Don’t Cry.” But there’s a sense of comfort present: “Blue” contains all the same themes we’ve seen before — longing, emptiness, sorrow — but the blend of acoustic guitar, piano, and electronic sounds (coupled with the members’ effortless, relaxed vocals) make for an unexpectedly heartwarming track.

Beast – I Knew It – 비스트 이럴 줄 알았어
“I Knew It” is a ballad with a sad melody and beat. It’s the first new song from B2ST since their 2011 album, ‘Fiction and Fact‘. The medium-tempo ballad perfectly blends the sounds of acoustic guitar with the rich harmony of the boys’ vocals.

Hyuna Trouble Maker – 현아 트러블 메이커
Trouble Maker’s first mini album, Trouble Maker, consists of a dance track as well as an emotional ballad, a solo song for Hyun-a, and a solo song for Hyunseung. But searching for the above keyword would lead to some controversial pictures of Hyunseung groping Hyuna in some live concert. So not really clear what made the song so searchable on the internet. A large number of fans complained about HyunA and Hyunseung’s racy choreography, and the duo were also forced to change their dance routine due to it being considered too sexy for national broadcast.

Yenny – 예은 Hello To Myself
Hello to Myself is the OST from the Korean Drama Dream High 2 and is one of my personal favorite, beautifully sung and composed by Yenny (from Wonder Girls). This soothing ballad gives off an indie rock vibe and can be seen/heard in Dream High 2′s Episode 6, where Haesung (Kang Sora) covers this song. A netizen commented, “Simple, clean-cut, no auto-tune and a super lovely girl. What does that get you? A nice day saying Hello to Yourself“.
